Fuel cells are electrochemical
energy conversion devices that will convert hydrogen and oxygen into water,
simultaneously produces electricity and heat in the process. fuel cell is a
form of simple technologies such as rechargeable batteries fuel to get energy
back, in this case the fuel is oxygen and hydrogen.
Just like a battery, any type of fuel cell has positive and negative electrodes, also called the cathode and anode. Chemical reactions that produce electricity take place at the electrodes. In addition to the electrodes, an electrolyte contained fuel cell unit that will carry electrical charges from one electrode to the other electrode, as well as the catalyst that will accelerate the reaction at the electrode. Generally what distinguishes the types of fuel cell is the electrolyte material used. The electric current and heat generated any type of fuel cell is a by-product of chemical reactions occurring at the cathode and anode.
Because of the energy produced by
the fuel cell is the chemical reaction of water formation, electrochemical
energy conversion devices will not produce side effects that are harmful to the
environment like conventional energy conversion devices (eg combustion process
in the engine). In terms of energy efficiency, the application of fuel cells in
portable battery like on a mobile phone or laptop will hold up to ten times
longer than lithium batteries. And to replenish the energy will be faster
because the energy is used instead of electricity, but fuel is a liquid or a
gas.
